The match was played in controversial circumstances after a bomb incident at the original fixture in October in Rotterdam. The Greek FA protested heavily that the match should have been converted to a regulatory 3-0 defeat for Holland but instead UEFA decided that the game be replayed. In this replay match John Bosman scored a hat-trick and Ronald Koeman got the other as Holland cruised to a 4-0 victory and secured their place at Euro 88.
