Roda went into the competition thanks to their KNVB Beker triumph over Heerenveen in the previous season. De Koempels absolutely smashed Israeli outfit Hapoël Be'er-Sheva in the 1st Round winning 14-1 on aggregate which included an outrageous 10-0 victory at the Sportpark Kaalheide. In the 2nd Round the side also made light work of NK Primorje winning 6-0 on aggregate before running into fancied Serie A outfit Vicenza who gave them a taste of their own medicine with a heavy 9-1 aggregate thrashing. It could be argued that if they had Ooijer for the tie with the Italians maybe the result would have been different with the strong centre back being snapped up by PSV in January '98.
